In a nutshell, a person decides what type of keyword terms they want to show up for and then make sure to be found there. In theory this sounds quite easy, in practice it is anything but that. Appearing on the first page of search engines for free (also known as organic ranking) is part science and part art.

To do so a person must focus on varying aspects of all of the following:
• Heading tags (H1 & H2)
• Linking (Internal and external)
• URL naming conventions (Domain, folder & file names)
• Title tags (page, graphics & textual links)
• Meta tags (keywords and descriptions)
There are those that believe the most important ingredient from the above list is back linking.

I would disagree.

It's not that I don't believe proper linking strategies work. However, considering it the only matter of importance is an error in my opinion. A case against me would be the recent project that I achieved 60+ keyword phrases on front pages of major search engines in less than 3 months all without a lick of on-page SEO.

However, the bottom line is that Google and Adwords can be extremely useful resources for Magento Ecommerce or whatever you are trying to market online when they are used correctly.
